ST JAMES CROSS AND SHELL PENDANT

A pewter cross of St James with a St Michael’s Way shell bale above.

Also known as the Santiago cross as it is the symbol used to mark the way for Pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostela.

The scallop shell is the traditional symbol of the pilgrim route.

This route crosses Cornwall on the Saint Michael’s Way from St Uny church, Lelant, to St Michael’s Mount near Penzance.

It was a route taken by Irish, Welsh and Cornish pilgrims,avoiding  tempestuous seas around Land’s End allowing them to visit the important shrine of St Michael’s Mount before embarking for Spain.
